Could you remind me again how we got into this financial mess?

Was it not people spending money they did not have?

According to the AP:

For the current year, the government would borrow 46 cents for every dollar it takes to run the government under the administration's plan. In 2010, it would borrow 35 cents for every dollar spent.

By this calculation, if I were making $54,000, I would be spending $100,000 this year and borrowing $46,000.

But not to worry, next year will be much better; I will only have to borrow $35,000.

This assumes I don’t spend more, which seems an illogical assumption given the socialists in charge of our government.

Higher Taxes

Who says that Democrats are for higher taxes? Obviously, top Democrats were not in favor of paying higher taxes.

Former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, nominated to be secretary of Health and Human Services, failed to pay $146,000 in back taxes. (Update: He has withdrawn his name.)

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner failed to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes while an employee at the International Monetary Fund.

Nancy Killefer, picked by President Obama to serve as the country’s chief performance officer, failed to pay unemployment taxes on household help (she has withdrawn from consideration for the post).

And don't forget Al Franken’s admission last April that his corporation had owed $70,000 in back taxes and penalties in 17 states on income earned from celebrity appearances and speeches. Franken’s corporation also failed to pay $25,000 in worker’s compensation insurance to his employees in New York.
